To drive for Roadway you must have a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with hazardous materials and double/triple trailer endorsements, meet all DOT requirements including physical examination and drug screen, a satisfactory driving history, and be able to demonstrate satisfactory skills and judgment to operate company equipment.
The summary and duties below are an overview of the most significant responsibilities for a Roadway driver. Specific information relative to each type of driver is listed in the description for each particular job.
Pickup and Delivery (P&D) City Local Driver
Summary: Pickup and delivery (P&D City or Local) drivers operate commercial motor vehicles to transport freight safely between a Roadway facility and a customer location and they load and unload freight from the truck for on-time, efficient movement of shipments. Many P&D drivers work in a local area and are able to return home daily.
Duties: Pickup and delivery drivers obtain their daily assignments and inspect their loads and equipment before leaving the Roadway facility. They operate commercial motor vehicles, often tractor trailer combinations, in urban, suburban, and rural areas in all weather conditions. They load and unload freight under varying environmental conditions at both company and customer facilities using approved techniques and procedures. When pickups and deliveries are completed, the driver returns to the facility and follows appropriate checkout procedures.
P&D drivers improve and update their professional skills on an ongoing basis and are required to maintain their DOT qualifications and license endorsements for double/triple and hazardous material.
Road (Linehaul) Driver
Summary: Road (or Linehaul) drivers safely operate commercial motor vehicles to transport freight between one Roadway facility and another. Road drivers may drive routes which take them cross-country preventing the driver from returning home every day.
Duties: Linehaul drivers obtain their assignments and inspect their paper work and equipment before leaving the Roadway facility. Road drivers operate commercial motor vehicles, tractor trailer combinations, in urban, suburban, and rural areas in all weather conditions transporting freight from point to point. They must be able to drop and hook trailers and change the configuration of their equipment en route. Linehaul drivers maintain driving logs and alert maintenance personnel to equipment problems.

Combination Driver and Dock Worker
Summary: Employees in the job Combination Driver Dock Worker may work freight, load or unload shipments, then drive a commercial motor vehicle to pickup and/or deliver freight for a customer. Many Combination Driver Dock Workers work within a local area and are able to return home daily.
